While buying a new vehicle is generally driven by emotion rather than necessity, there are instances where the opposite is true. If you're a contractor or your retirement plans involve acquiring a large RV, you'll likely need to consider purchasing a heavy-duty truck. The GMC Sierra 1500 is a competent and versatile truck, but it has its limits, and that's where a model like the GMC Sierra HD comes into play. This truck bridges the gap between a standard pickup and a semi-truck. In fact, I seriously wonder why the government doesn't require a special class on a driver's license for this type of vehicle.

As you might guess, this is the kind of vehicle that's no joke. The 2024 GMC Sierra HD is capable of handling just about any task you throw at it. It's a model that stands out for its power and style. It's also the most luxurious truck in its category on the market. The 2024 GMC Sierra HD lacks nothing in terms of equipment. Simply put, if you think you need more capability, you'd need to look at a commercial truck.

Range and Pricing

The 2024 GMC Sierra HD lineup is divided into two categories. First, there's the 2500 series and then the 3500 series with enhanced capabilities. The 2500 version is ideal for people with large RVs or general contractors. As for the 3500 series, it's designed for heavy-duty work or very heavy loads. Its starting price is $64,133 and can go up to $130,433 for the Denali Ultimate version. The American manufacturer's truck is available with various cab sizes and bed lengths, allowing you to choose the configuration that best meets your needs. It's worth noting that the American manufacturer's truck can tow up to 36,000 pounds in certain configurations, which is enormous.

Category and Competition

There aren't many players in the heavy-duty truck segment. In fact, as you probably guessed, the Sierra HD's competition is limited to American models, notably from Ford and RAM. There's also a rival to the Sierra HD within the GM family with the Chevrolet Silverado HD. In the end, it's all a matter of taste. There's also the fact that the Sierra HD offers slightly higher-end finishes.

Rivals: Chevrolet Silverado HD, Ford Super Duty, RAM HD

Design and Technology

The GMC Sierra HD is certainly an imposing and massive truck, but it remains elegant and stylish nonetheless. I think the engineers did an excellent job with the design, and I must admit that, in my humble opinion, it's the best-looking truck in its category. Now, as for the interior, GMC finally offers something modern. Until recently, the American manufacturer lagged behind the competition, but that's no longer the case. The truck benefits from fully digital instrumentation and a smooth, high-performing multimedia system. However, where the GMC Sierra HD truly stands out from the competition is in the quality of its finish, which is far superior to what you'll find elsewhere.

Performance

There are only two engine options available for the 2024 GMC Sierra HD, starting with a 6.6-liter V8 gas engine. This engine produces 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Let me tell you now that this option is far from the most popular. Next up is the diesel engine. Once again, it's a 6.6-liter engine, but this time with a turbocharger to boost the numbers. The diesel engine delivers 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque, which allows it to offer a towing capacity of up to 36,000 pounds. Additionally, there's a name that resonates particularly when it comes to trucks, and that's Allison—the transmission that accompanies the GMC Sierra HD. It's legendary, to say the least.

Weak Points

The price increases quickly from one version to another. The gas V8 is thirsty and not very popular.

Strong Points

It's a capable and very versatile truck. The interior is comfortable and very luxurious. It definitely turns heads as it passes. The powertrain is efficient and highly reliable.

Signature Features

The luxury, the Allison transmission, and the styling of the Sierra HD are the elements that set it apart from the competition.

Final Word

The American manufacturer's truck is among the most popular vehicles on the market, both with contractors and individuals. The GMC team has done an excellent job making the Sierra HD ultra-competitive, but most importantly, enjoyable to drive and comfortable. In my opinion, it's one of the most interesting trucks for anyone who spends many hours behind the wheel.
